The way a musician approaches and plays  his/her instrument is a direct reflection of the way the body is used in everyday life.  The musician is often unaware of these movements.  When a musician experiences pain and/or discomfort while playing, it is often a function of these daily, unconscious movements.  For example, breathing patterns, gait and posture may indicate tensions held in the body.  The tensions are then mirrored in the musician's technique, musicality and sound.

Marcia Lesser's approach offers "whole body consciousness," a requisite for releasing tension in the body, by bringing physical and mental awareness to these patterns.  A typical pattern may be tightness in the legs and lower back which adversely affect the mobility of the neck, in turn limiting arm and shoulder movements.  Ms. Lesser provides the key to whole body consciousness through her Body/Instrument Technique, derived from her experience as a professional dancer, her work as a movement therapist, her vast knowledge of movement and psychodynamic techniques and her innate understanding of how the body moves.  Her dynamically informed technique provides musicians with individually designed programs that offer much needed body/instrument clarity; enabling pain free playing, more efficient ways to practice and perform and enhanced technique and sound.

Ms. Lesser is a movement therapist and psychotherapist and has had a private practice in New York City for over twenty-five years.  She is a guest lecturer at the Juilliard School and teaches seminars throughout the New York area.  Many of her clients are musicians-students, teachers and performers-who suffer from stress-related symptoms including neck, arm and back pain and discomfort. Ms. Lesser also helps musicians who are pain free but feel disconnected to their bodies -disembodied-and know this affects their sound and musicality.
